Celebrating 50 Years of Handbell Ringers of Japan

On November 20, 1976, six Handbell Choirs came together for the very first Handbell Festival at Aoyama Gakuin Hall in Tokyo — marking the founding of Handbell Ringers of Japan (HRJ), and, we're proud to say, the first handbell guild in Asia. Today, HRJ is a community of around 400 Handbell Choirs and individual members, brought together through our National Festival, regional festivals, workshops, and more — all in service of one simple joy: sharing the beauty of handbell ringing.

Handbell ringing has grown considerably across Asia in the years since, and to mark this half-century, we would like to move forward together with friends from across the region's growing handbell community. We are honored to invite you to join us for the 50th Anniversary Asia Festival, to be held in July 2027 in Tokyo at the Ryogoku Kokugikan — a landmark sumo arena in a beautifully convenient location in the heart of the city.

We sincerely hope to welcome many of our friends from across Asia to this milestone celebration, and we look forward to sharing in a program of music, fellowship, and cultural exchange together.
